157th Anniversary Dinner at Zhonghua Restaurant, Cititel Hotel,
Penang on Saturday, 17th August 2013
On behalf of the Board of
Trustees of Hokkien Kongsi, Penang, I would like to extend a warm
welcome to all of you for attending our 157th Anniversary Dinner.
We have been entrusted by the
Hokkien Community since 1856 to look after the following 5 temples in
Hin Keong (Snake Temple) in Sungei Kluang
Cheng Leong Keong
(Tai Tay Yah) in Jelutong
Kim Hoe Keong &
Siew Thean Keong in Jalan Dato Keramat
Seng Hong Beow
in Jalan C. Y. Choy
Chooi Bee Keong
in Jalan Tanjung Tokong
Presently our monthly income is about Rm25,000/- per month and we use
this income to maintain, repair and restore the 5 temples.
In 1980, we built the Kuan Yin
Hall in Snake Temple for Rm200,000/-. In 2006 we spent
Rm800,000/- on a major restoration of Snake Temple (Rm500,000/- from
our funds, Rm200,000/- from a major donor and Rm100,000/- from Federal
In the 1990s we spent Rm200,000/- each restoring Kim Hoe Keong/Siew
Thean Keong in Jalan Dato Keramat and Chooi Bee Keong in Jalan Tanjung
Last year we spent Rm200,000/-
repairing and rebuilding the back portion of Seng Hong Beow. We
are now planning to restore the front portion of Seng Hong Beow and
build a 2-storey building cum opera stage opposite the temple. To
date we have received Rm47,000/- from devotees and well wishers.
We have checked the 5 Temples
and realize that Cheng Leong Keong (Tai Tay Yah) in Jelutong needs
major repair and renovation. The estimated cost is about
Rm900,000/-. We would like to appeal to the State Government for
help in this major project. To-date we have received
Rm31,000/- from devotees and well wishers.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the trustees of
Hokkien Kongsi, Penang for their invaluable support and help in
maintaining these 5 temples.
