Hokkien Kongsi 156th Anniversary Dinner on 1st September 2012

The Board of Trustees of  Hokkien Kongsi, Penang welcomes all of you to celebrate our 156th Anniversary Dinner with us this evening.

Last year at our 155th Anniversary Dinner, the present State Government returned the Title Deed of the land opposite the Snake Temple after it was acquired in 1974.  That was indeed a milestone in the history of  Hokkien Kongsi, Penang.  We had to wait for 37 long years.  Once again, we would like to say a big Thank You to YB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow for putting an end to our misery.

Today we are happy to inform you that the State Government has intervened, yet again, and will be giving us the title deed to the present site of Chooi Bee Keong at Tanjung Tokong, opposite the Bomba.  This is in exchange for our land, which was acquired by MPPP for road widening in 1979.  We are very glad to inform you that it is due to the untiring efforts of  YB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow that MPPP has finally agreed to give us this title deed after 33 long years.  Truth be told, we had to file a civil suit against MPPP and we will be withdrawing our claim, now that this matter has been settled amicably.

We are glad to inform you that Hokkien Kongsi, Penang has set up our own Website and Facebook, the addresses of which have been put at your tables for your information.

We have engaged Researcher, Mr. Tan Kim Hong, to research the history of the five Hokkien Clans namely Cheah, Khoo, Lim, Tan and Yeoh and the five temples, namely
Chooi Bee Keong at Tg Tokong,
Seng Hong Beow at Jalan C. Y Choy,
Kim Hoe Keong/Siew Thean Keong at Jalan Dato’ Keramat,
Cheng Leong Keong aka Tai Tay Yah at Jelutong
and Hock Hin Keong aka Snake Temple.

A coffee table book will be produced to document this history.

We are pleased to announce that we have progressed into the Digital Age by digitizing all our documents for easy reference.

We are taking steps to integrate heritage with technology so that we will stay relevant in the years to come.  I have been repeatedly told by someone close to me, to move forward into the Digital Age or you will be a living dinosaur.  I have taken her advice because dinosaurs have become extinct and Hokkien Kongsi does not want to go in that direction.

Enjoy your dinner tonight.  Thank you for sharing this happy occasion with us.

Khoo Kay Hock, P.K.T.
Chairman, Hokkien Kongsi, Penang
